5 foods that damage teeth- avoid these food to avoid tooth decay

foods that damage teeth

Many people believe that brushing teeth twice a day is enough to maintain dental hygiene. Though it is a good start, but not enough. The food we eat has the potential to affect the outer lining of teeth and hence result in disturbing our oral hygiene. Even if we use the best ayurvedic toothpaste in India to brush our teeth, keeping in mind the foods that damage teeth, is always an added advantage.

The main reason food affects our teeth is that it has the tendency to cause plaque and cavities in our teeth. Plaque is the sticky layer that covers our teeth which contains bacteria responsible for causing gum diseases and tooth decay. These bacteria release acids which attack the enamel of our teeth and result in cavities.

Isn’t that scary? Well to avoid cavities and a painful trip to the dentist, apart from brushing your teeth regularly, try to avoid these foods that damage teeth:

Candies

It is a well-known fact that candies are bad for teeth. Out of those, sour candies are the worst. They have acids that cause a strong attack on our teeth and stick to them. This results in a faster decay of teeth.

Bread

Bread contains starch which, when comes in contact with saliva, decomposes into sugar. This paste-like substance sticks between the gaps in teeth. This is the perfect setting to cause cavities.

Carbonated Drinks

It is found that drinking large amounts of soda or carbonated drinks is as damaging as methamphetamine and cracks cocaine. Carbonated soda helps the plaque produce more acid to attack the tooth enamel. It is like coating teeth with acid.

Ice

Even though ice is just water, studies have shown that chewing ice can damage enamel and cause dental injuries like chipped, cracked, or broken teeth or loosened crowns.

Citrus Fruits

Fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruit contain citric acid that erodes the tooth enamel. They make the teeth more vulnerable to early decay. They also cause discomfort to the mouth sores.

One point that is to be kept in mind is that these foods that damage teeth are to be avoided especially when you have sensitive teeth. Sensitivity in teeth causes them to be more prone to attack from bacteria and dental diseases. Therefore, it is best to use ayurvedic toothpaste for sensitive teeth to prevent such diseases.
